Spectacular Holland – Germany draw at Keukenhof

LISSE – The bonds between the Netherlands and Germany are tightening more and more and Keukenhof 2011 stresses this development by selecting ’Germany, Nation of Philosophers and Poets’ as the theme for the world’s largest international flower exhibition. The approximately 800,000 visitors are invited to experience the extraordinary relation between both countries in the Juliana Pavilion. “They can undergo the tense of the Holland-Germany football games of 1974 and 1988 again. The only difference is the result. I already know that both games ends in a 1-1 draw,” Wim van Meerveld, marketing manager of Keukenhof, says.

The ‘Holland-Germany 1-1 Experience’ is an advanced presentation of what both countries unite as well as separate by means of information. For example that 25 percent of the Dutch export heads towards Germany, and that some 4 million Dutchmen last year choose Germany for spending their holiday. The Experience led the visitors through a world of similarities and differences in a very expressive way. They celebrate the victories of the greatest Dutch and German athletes, become a part of the football lunacy and imagine to act as the goalkeeper among the national football heroes. They take a seat on a throne, while being immortalized. They are able to have a clear look on the Golden Carriage and grasp the drift of the line “I am of German blood” [Ik ben van Duitschen Bloed] in the national anthem.

Beautiful paintings of Suzan Offereins are part of the Experience. She made portraits of many members of the Royal Family, among which Her Majesty Queen Beatrix and Crown Prince Willem-Alexander. Especially for the Experience she pictured the late Prince Bernhard van Lippe Biesterfeld. Furthermore Keukenhof is proud to have the scoop of her most recent project of art: an exquisite throne with a portrayal of the present and future Head of State.

It is surely worthwhile to enter the cinema, in which a mega screen takes one in a journey through the Netherlands and Germany. “Enjoy our major differences and embrace our similarities,” says Ton Aker, park manager of Keukenhof. “This special exhibition really is a highlight, illuminating the many aspects of the Dutch-German bonds. In particular the ornamental plant cultivation and the tourist industry play a leading role in our trade contacts and it is no accident that those are the basic disciplines of Keukenhof.”
