    History

Where Keukenhof is situated now, was a hunting area in the 15th century. Herbs for the kitchen of the castle of Jacoba van Beieren were also collected here; hence the name Keukenhof.

The current park was a section of the sizeable estate of Slot Teylingen, with beautiful untamed bushes and dunes. After the decease of Jacoba van Beieren Keukenhof fell into the hands of rich merchant families. Baron and baroness Van Pallandt invited landscape architects J.D. and L.P. Zocher, designers of the Amsterdam Vondelpark, to make a design for the garden around the castle. This design, in the English landscape style, has always been the basis of Keukenhof.

At the moment the estate belongs to a Foundation. On the initiative of the Lisse mayor of that time and a number of leading flower bulb growers and exporters, an open air flower exhibition was organised here for the first time in 1949. This expanded to an annually recurring event that has always drawn great numbers of visitors from all over the world. This is how Keukenhof became the park that we now know.

    Organisation

The structure: short lines, open communication
The Keukenhof Association is managed by the Board of Management; the management has a policy determining role, the policy preparing and execution lies with the organization. Management members are selected for this function based on their knowledge, skill, experience and contacts. The management is open and stimulating, partially remotely, but available if specific expertise is required. Management forms the link with the organization: all formal lines join here. The general director is at the head of the Keukenhof company. He is responsible for the daily state of affairs and reports to the management. Management and board of directors maintain an open communication with each other. The board of directors communicate over relevant affairs with the management team, who then feeds this back to the departments. Vice-versa Keukenhof expects that their employees will come forward with ideas and developments that could be of interest to the organization. Once a year the entire organization meets to catch up on current developments; then it is the opportunity far any person to ask a questions.

    A personal culture

In the Keukenhof company everything is directed at making the park magnificent for the two months of the open period. In all respects. The team have a collective mission here. Employees work constructively with each other and are prepared to put in more than their actual function-description indicates. Keukenhof has an open business culture, where, next to a clear communication and clear agreements, trust and respect are the key words. By being positive, everyone delivers a contribution to the working pleasure at Keukenhof. Translated this will obviously be a magnificent spring exhibition which inspires thousands of visitors annually.
