Tulipmania In the 16th century the tulip came from Turkey to the Netherlands and became extremely popular. From 1635 the trade in tulip bulbs became enormous and a true tulipmania arose. Rich people as well as poor, started speculating and some tulip bulbs were sold many times without the owner ever seeing them. The amount of money involved could be several thousands of guilders, often with borrowed money. In these times you had to spend a small fortune for one tulip. For the price of some flower bulbs, you could have bought a house in Amsterdam. Because of this foolish trade many people became bankrupt. In 1637 the Government put an end to the Tulipmania and prices were fixed to a maximum of 50 florins per flowerbulb.
